College Students and Credit Cards

By: Larry Goldberg

Think of an average college student. What comes to mind? Books, studying, homework….credit cards? That’s right, college students and credit cards are becoming inseparable these days. Student credit cards are now readily available and are very visible on campuses everywhere. Students have a lot to consider when deciding whether or not to get a credit card. Here is some basic information:
Credit cards can be good. This is especially true for busy college students who can use them to shop online and make other secure purchases. Plus, they’re nice to have on hand for emergencies. Credit cards, when used properly, can also be helpful in establishing a good credit history.

However, they can also be dangerous. You have to always remember that credit cards are not the same as money in the bank. They’re actually high interest loans. Unless you’re going to pay the balance in full every month, it’s better not to use them too freely since you’ll be paying interest on your balance.

Credit cards are a big responsibility. Student credit cards open up entire new realms of responsibility for those who use them. Payments have to be made on time each month, or it will cost you. You need to keep track of your transactions, your interest rate, and your balance to keep everything in order. Your good name is at stake here, so act responsibly.

There are lots to choose from. From low interest introductory APRs to prepaid credit cards, you have many options to consider. Low interest cards can be a great way to save money, but watch for that interest rate to climb after a certain period of time. Prepaid credit cards can be a good choice for students because you’re not spending money you don’t have. With this type of card, your balance goes down instead of up as you make purchases. Remember, some credit cards are better than others, so choose carefully.

There’s a lot to think about when considering opening a new student credit card. Think about which kind of card you want and what you’re going to use it for. Plan a budget and spend wisely. When you see those credit card booths start popping up on campus and wanting your business, gather the facts and make an informed decision – your new credit card may be with you a long time.
