Using Your New Student Credit Card To Pay Your Bills Online By: Larry Goldberg One of the best things about having your new student credit card is your ability to pay your bills online. That can streamline things a bit as instead of having to deal with lots of bills each month, heading to the post office to buy stamps, mailing them, and all of the other hassles involved, you can simply use your credit card to deal with all of your monthly bills. That means you pay one bill each month – your credit card bill, and the automatic cycle starts all over again. There are, though, a few things to consider.
The first thing you should think about is how to pay your bills using your credit card. There are three basic ways to do this. First, you can go to the bill company’s website. Whether you’re dealing with your electric bill or your cell phone bill, most of them allow you to create an account. You can then log back in to pay each month using your new student credit card or you can sign up for an auto pay feature where the money will be charged to your credit card each month without you even having to ask. Keep in mind, though, that if you choose this option, you must be aware of the fact that the money will be charged to your account so you don’t go over your credit limit. The second way you can pay your bills using your credit card is by setting up an autobill pay function through your card company. While this is sometimes only available with debit-type cards, other traditional cards are catching on to the idea. Talk with your card company to see if they offer a bill payer function through their website. The final way you can pay your bills using your credit card is to make use of a bill payer service. Things like Yahoo! Bill Pay will charge you a fee, but you can simply log onto the site, click on each bill you want to pay (or set up an auto debit), and the amount will be directly charged to your card.
Once you’ve set up the logistics of paying your bills with your student credit card, you need to think about the safety issues involved. Since ID theft is increasingly common in our society, you must think about ways to protect yourself. First, if possible, use only a trusted computer source. In general, using a computer lab to pay your bills isn’t the world’s best idea. Second, be sure to physically log out of every account you view while you’re online. Finally, clear your computer’s cookies and temporary internet files when you’ve finished. If you want to further protect each account, protect them with a password and a security question that only you would know the answer to.
Paying your bills online with your new credit card is the perfect time-saving solution. Be safe about it, but enjoy the freedoms your new student credit card offers you.
